Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's volleyball continued conference play in a tough matchup against Roosevelt University this weekend. From Friday evening March 13th into Saturday afternoon the Bearcats battled hard. Despite a strong opening set in front of the home crowd, and several standout individual performances, the Bearcats fell to Roosevelt 3–1 Friday night. Roosevelt then kept the momentum, beating the Bearcats 3-0 on Saturday.
SBU came out firing in the first set Friday night, taking control early behind efficient attacking and steady defense. The Bearcats closed the first frame 25–22 for their first set in GLVC play in program history, but Roosevelt responded with a major momentum shift in set two and carried that energy through the remainder of the weekend.
Friday's standouts included Freshman
Lucas Phelan led the Bearcats offensively, finishing with 12 kills, 7 digs, and 13 total points. Fellow freshman
Darrell Kosechequetah added an efficient spark in his two sets of action, tallying 5 kills and 4 digs. Defensively, the Bearcats totaled 17 block assists and 34 digs, keeping them competitive in long rallies throughout the night. However, Roosevelt's late‑set execution beat out our Bearcats.
Saturday the Men's Volleyball team fought just as hard tallying a team total 26 kills on 24 assists, alongside 19 digs and 4 blocks. The team was once again led by Phelan with 7 kills. The team shared the success as
Donel Sengele had 5 of his own, followed by
Evan Strahlendorf and Darrel Kosechequetah each with 4 kills.
Brice Knoll had a huge hand in the match as he accounted for 18 of the 24 team assists.
