Bearcats Claw Past Peacocks for Statement Road Win

Fayette, Iowa – SBU men's basketball enjoyed a successful trip to Iowa defeating the Upper Iowa Peacocks 86-74. Their first ever program win against the Peacocks and one of the top teams in the GLVC moves SBU to 11-9 on the season (5-7 GLVC).

The Bearcats began the game with intensity, dominating to an early 16-3 lead. From there, the team in purple cruised to victory, never allowing Upper Iowa to take the lead from them. Southwest Baptist's solid performance was in large part due to the team's shooting abilities on the night. SBU made 27 of their 47 field goal attempts, resulting in an excellent 57.4% field goal percentage. The team was also composed from the charity stripe, sinking 29 of 34 free throws for an 85.3% free throw percentage. Even though the team only knocked down three 3-pointers in the game, a big one came in the final minutes as Luke Ogle found the back board as the shot clock expired for a big three points.

Individually, junior Jevin Sullivan led the way with his offensive performance consisting of 23 points and four assists. He was a major contributor to the Bearcats' high shooting percentages, making seven of his nine field goal attempts and shooting 90% from the free throw line. Junior Zac Reedus was a close second to Sullivan in terms of offensive production, scoring 19 points despite missing the final 7:31 of the game due to personal foul accumulation.

Defensively, Southwest Baptist racked up an impressive six blocks, largely thanks to sophomore Brandon Moore who tallied four blocks on his own. Moore completed his defensive performance with two of three of the team's steals and one rebound. The leaders in rebounding for the game were Sullivan and Reedus who earned nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

The Bearcats will hope to extend their two game win streak when they return to the court on Saturday, January 31 to take on Quincy University (8-11). The game is set to tip off at 3:00 p.m. from Quincy, Illinois.
