Bolivar, Mo— The Southwest Baptist University Men's soccer team took on their opponents of University of Illinois Springfield at home Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats came out and defeated the Prairie Stars with a final score of 2-1. This moves them to 4-5 (1-3 GLVC) on the season.
During the first half of the game the team played hard only allowing 2 shots on goal which goalie graduate student Jan-Henry Schafer skillfully defended.
Late into the first half, sophomore
Piotr Rapczynski had a break and played the ball beautifully across the box to the feet of
Hugo Lopes who found the back of the net. His first goal of the season put the Bearcats up 1-0 with five minutes left in the first.
Midway through the second half, the Prairie Stars answered with a goal of their own to knot up the score. Fifteen minutes later
junior Myles Paniagua netted his third goal of the season assisted by
graduate student Victor Valero and
senior Iker Lorenzo. This gave the Bearcats the lead and the motivation they needed to secure a win.
With the assist on that goal, Lorenzo recorded his fourth of the season tying for the most assists in the GLVC. He now is tied for the second most assists by a Bearcat in single season history.
The next game will be held at University of Indianapolis in Indiana at 7:30pm on Friday October 3rd.
