Searcy, Ark. - Southwest Baptist University's women's volleyball team opened their weekend Thursday afternoon in Searcy, Arkansas with a rematch against the Harding Bisons. The two teams previously faced each other at the SBU Invitational, which turned out to be a game where SBU would just fall short through five sets. Thursday's match was not as close of a contest as SBU lost in three sets moving the Bearcats to 3-6 on the season.
Â
The first set began as a tight contest with the score staying close until a 9-1 run from Harding put the Bison up 5-14. The Bearcats were unable to turn it around and dropped the first set. Despite a 5-1 run by the Bearcats in the second set, led by servers
Katie Pogue and
Hannah Jackson, the second set ended as the first did. The third set followed the trend of the first two sets. Southwest Baptist did show some positive signs, however, as freshman
Chloe Chafins and junior
Rory Stanley both recorded a service ace. Stanley also served for a 5-0 run by SBU, but Harding still finished with the victory.
Â
Senior Pogue led SBU in assists on the night with nine. Jackson tied freshman
Gabriela Dupree for the lead in kills with five a piece. The blockers also totaled ten block assists as a team.
Â
The Bearcats resume the Harding Invite Friday with a double header against Trevecca Nazarene University (4-2) and the University of Arkansas Fort Smith (5-3). The first game against Trevecca Nazarene will start at 9:30am with the game against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith following soon after at 2:30pm.
