Liberty, MO. - The SBU Softball team dropped two close games against the Cardinals of William Jewell on Monday, moving them to 17-23 (9-11 GLVC) on the season.
Game 1: L, 8-9
Emma Kreisel started on the mound for the Bearcats but was replaced by
Kylee Dewey early on before
Taylor Howard came in to pitch 4.2 innings. Howard finished with the loss but only gave up four hits.
William Jewell put up a five spot in the bottom of the 1st and added two more in the 2nd to start the game with seven unanswered runs. SBU eventually got things going when
Hallie McMillian crossed the plate on a Cardinal error in the top of the 4th. The Cardinals responded with another run in the bottom half before SBU scored seven straight runs over the next three innings to tie things up in the top half of the 7th. In the 5th,
Angie Micone scored on a throwing error and
Keeley Elsea made it home on an RBI single up the middle from
Shalie Wooden. Moving to the 6th, SBU exploded for four runs that started with Hayley SItes scoring on another Cardinal error.
Kate McConville then hit an RBI single that scored
Margo Frossard and
Shalie Wooden hit two more in on another single up the middle, scoring Elsea and McConville. In the 7th, McConville continued her hot night at the plate with an RBI double, bringing in Frossard again to tie things up. William Jewell however answered with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th to walk away with the 9-8 victory.
At the plate, SBU outhit the Cardinals 13-9 with McConville and Wooden each finishing with four hits apiece.
Margo Frossard finished with two doubles and two runs.
Game 2: L, 1-2
The second game of the afternoon changed narratives completely as both pitchers went deep into the game and resulted in a pitcher's duel. On the mound for the Bearcats,
Paige Leithead finished with the loss (2-1), despite pitching into the 5th inning and only giving up two runs.
The Cardinals scored one in the 1st and another in the 5th before SBU was able to start a comeback attempt on a single off the bat of
Audrey Rahlmann that scored
Margo Frossard in the top of the 7th. However, William Jewell closed things out to complete the sweep.
The Bearcats will return for some action in Bolivar on Sunday, April 13th as they host Rockhurst University at 12 & 2 PM.
