Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist softball team split their Saturday series against the Missouri S&T Miners going 1-1. That now moves them to 20-26 (12-14 GLVC) on the season.
Game 1: W, 5-4
The Bearcats got on the board first with a double from
Shalie Wooden in the first inning to score Gracee Godfrey and
Keeley Elsea. A rally by the Miners in the 3
rd and the 4
th inning put the Bearcats behind 2-4. Southwest Baptist answered with a rally of their own in the 6
th inning with three runs capped by a
Lexi Detwiler game winning 2 RBI single.
Paige Leithead started on the mound for the Bearcats throwing a strong 3.2 innings with three strikeouts before
Abby Leer took over. The freshman held the Miners scoreless for the remainder of the game as she has done multiple times this season. Recording her fifth win of the season, she is proving to be one of the top freshmen in the conference.
Game 2: L, 1-3
The scoreless game was broken up in the second inning when Wooden added another RBI to her total on the day with a solo home run to right field. That was the only Bearcat run for the game as the Miner pitcher held strong throughout the remainder of the game. After the Miners tied it up in the 4
th, the game remained knotted up at one until the 7
th inning when two solo home runs from Missouri S&T propelled them to the win.
Kylee Dewey started on the mound throwing 3.2 innings allowing one run.
Shalie Wooden threw the next 2.2 innings recording the loss before
Emma Kreisel took over in the final inning.
Southwest Baptist head into their final regular season series of the season Sunday against rival Drury Panthers. The doubleheader will begin at 12pm at SBU softball field.
While they will be honoring their 10 seniors in between the games, the Bearcats still have a chance to make the GLVC tournament for the first time in program history. With five teams still vying for two spots, there are numerous different outcomes that could put the Bearcats in the final 8. Below are a couple of scenarios Bearcat fans can root for heading into the final day of action across the GLVC. In both of these scenarios SBU will clinch a spot to the conference tournament.
