Late Game Heroics Earn Bearcats GLVC Opening Sweep

St. Louis, Mo. – The SBU softball began GLVC play in stellar fashion sweeping the University of Missouri St. Louis Tritons in a doubleheader on the road. These two wins mark the first ever 2-0 start to GLVC play since joining the conference in 2019.

Game 1: Win, 5-3
The Bearcats started out behind until the second inning when SBU record holder Margo Frossard blasted her second home run of the season to tie the game at one. An Audrey Rahlmann single in the 3rd gave SBU a 2-1, until UMSL tied the game and took a one run lead in the following innings. Despite trailing by a run heading into their final three outs, the Bearcats show their comeback ability with a team effort rally. Reigning GLVC Freshman of the Year Angie Micone got the rally going with a single down the left field line knocking in two runs for a 4-3. Another RBI from Margo Frossard gave Emma Kreisel an extra insurance run heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Kreisel ended the game with a quick 1-2-3 inning picking up her third win of the season. Her stellar pitching didn't start there as she threw a complete game allowing only three runs off eight hits. She also had an SBU career high 10 strikeouts.

Game 2: Win, 7-4 (8 innings)
The second game of the day was a defensive battle with only two total runs scored until the 7th inning, one from each team. SBU's bats came alive in the top half knocking in three runs, two of those coming of Micone's bat in a double down the left field line. Despite a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th, the Tritons were not done fighting scoring three runs before SBU could record an out. Freshman Abby Leer came in to shut the Tritons down forcing an extra inning tied up at four.

Lexi Detwiler got the inning started with a hit, then an out and a walk later Graccee Godfrey put the Bearcats back on top with a single to right center. Hayley Sites came up clutch recording her fourth hit of the season with a double scoring two more runs giving SBU even more insurance heading to the bottom of the 8th. Leer finished out the game completing the sweep and recording her second win of the season.

Box Score Highlights:
Keeley Elsea made big statement showing SBU deserves back-to-back GLVC freshman of the year awards as she went 4-5 on the day scoring three runs to go along with her .800 batting average. Micone continued her strong season with four hits and four RBI's on the day, leading the Bearcats. The only other Bearcat to record four hits was junior Graccee Godfrey batting .500.

Southwest Baptist will look for a perfect weekend Sunday afternoon as they finish their road trip to Lincoln University. The doubleheader will take place in Jefferson City, Missouri beginning at 12:00pm
