Stellar Pitching Leads Bearcats to Sweep Over Peacocks

Macks Creek, Mo. – The SBU softball team continued their conference season Monday afternoon as they swept the Upper Iowa Peacocks in a doubleheader. Those two wins moves them to 17-19 (9-7 GLVC) on the season. This win gives the Bearcats their most conference wins since 2017, and a firm 6th place spot in the GLVC standings.

Game 1: W, (5-1)
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Bearcats got on the scoreboard after a triple from Margo Frossard sent Reagan Echelmeier across the plate. Shortly after Angie Micone singled to center field scoring Frossard. A solo homerun from the Peacocks in the 4th closed the gap but stellar pitching from freshman Abby Leer kept Upper Iowa at bay.

The Bearcats gave Leer some insurance runs in the 4th with a two RBI double from Gracee Godfrey and a sacrifice fly from Audrey Rahlmann, making it 5-1. Leer pitched a complete game allowing only one run off six hits for her third win of the season. She also threw three strikeouts.

Game 2: W, (6-3)
In the second game of the day, Upper Iowa got off to an early lead scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Another triple from Frossard cut that lead in half in the bottom half of the second inning scoring Rahlmann. A 5-0 run from there started with a three-run 3rd inning with RBI's from Shalie Wooden, Rahlmann, and Lexi Detwiler. The scoring ended for the Bearcats in the 4th inning after a two RBI double from Grace Stearns giving SBU a 6-2 lead. The Peacocks attempted a rally in the 7th scoring one run, but pitcher Shalie Wooden shut them down.

Paige Leithead started the game on the mound throwing two innings, allowing two runs. In the top of the third, Wooden came in to relieve and nearly pitched a scoreless outing only allowing one run in the 7th. She picked up her 7th win of the season while recording three strikeouts.

Southwest Baptist will return to action this coming weekend as they travel to Liberty, Missouri to take on William Jewell. This continued conference schedule will take place on Saturday, April 5th beginning at 12:00pm.
