Late Game Push Not Enough in DH Loss to Peacocks

Bolivar, MO - The SBU Baseball Team continued their four-game series versus conference foe Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon in two doubleheader losses. This brings their record to 11-14 (4-3 GLVC) on the season.

Game 1: L, 0-5

After a three-game stretch of scoring 10+ runs the Bearcats bats cooled off in this one. The Peacocks slowly added to their score throughout the game, scoring five across across three different innings. The Bearcats were able to attack the bases early with strong at-bats despite not recording a hit. Clutch pitching from Upper Iowa, kept the Bearcats scoreless throughout the game. Dominic Tellez recorded the sole hit for Southwest Baptist.

On the mound, Ryan McClish got the start throwing 3.2 innings but allowed all five runs. McClish recorded the loss but Cade Langford and Colin Whited saw time on the mound, with everyone combining for five strikeouts.

Game 2: L, 5-6

Peacocks carried their momentum from game one into game two scoring four runs in the first inning. Two runs later had SBU trailing by six heading into the bottom of the 4th. The Bearcats didn't give up, as they began to fire back on Upper Iowa recording their first runs of the day. After a single homer from Tre Mungin, the bats began to get rolling. Hits from Raydley Legito, Cayden Shaver and an RBI bunt from Hayden Prewitt put the Bearcats back in striking position before the 5th inning only down 2-6.

Connor Hammonds closed out the remaining three innings on the mound allowing zero hits, zero runs and throwing two strikeouts on only 34 pitches. This strong pitching put the Bearcat in prime offense to make a late game run. Lane Snow hit a clutch double to left center bringing in pinch runner Nick Brown. SBU then racked up two quick outs before showing one last push. Sterling Jackson hit a double to left field for an RBI to get the Bearcats within two. Then Raydley Legito hit SBU's third double of the inning to left field for an RBI with Senior Cayden Shaver coming to the plate. With the game in the balance Upper Iowa brought a closer in for one final at bat, shutting the Bearcats down.

Despite the Bearcats coming up short today they hope to take this late game momentum into the final game of the series Sunday at noon at Dodson Field.
