SBU Completes Comeback for First Conference Victory

Liberty, Mo. – The SBU women's basketball team completed a 15-point comeback Thursday evening for their first GLVC win of the season. This win came against the William Jewell Cardinals by a final score of 60-58. Bearcats now move to 3-5 (1-2 GLVC) on the season.

Early in the game, SBU got off to a quick lead by as much as four, five minutes in. However, the Cardinals ended the first quarter on a 13-0 run to put the Bearcats down nine. That lead continued to extend in the second quarter as it got built up to as much as 15. From there the Bearcats began their comeback train cutting the lead down to four in just four minutes of play. Four different Bearcats scored in that time including Tinu Fakunle, Kamiyah Hurd, Alice Woodward, and Natalia Crooke. William Jewell pushed right back to make it a 10-point game at half.

Not much difference happened in the third quarter as the teams would trade baskets, but the Bearcats got the better end of it closing the gap to six after thirty minutes.  That margin remained until a Hurd jumper and back-to-back three pointers by Crooke put SBU up one. She would go on to score five more points in the quarter as the Bearcats maintained that lead to victory.

Hurd led all in scoring with 16 to go along with her 12 rebounds for another double double. She shot 60% from the field and had a perfect 7-7 shooting from the free throw line. Just behind her in scoring was Crooke (15), Ida Lusadisu N'Gonda (14), and Fakunle (11). The team's 39 rebounds were nine more than the Cardinals and helped lead in second chance points 15-10.

SBU women's basketball will take this momentum into their fourth and final conference game in eight days this Saturday. This game will take place Saturday in Kirksville, Missouri against Truman State at 1:00 p.m.
