Liberty, Mo. - Southwest Baptist women's volleyball started a two-game road trip Friday evening. The first of this two game set was against William Jewell College as the Bearcats won in a five-set thriller 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-10). That win gave SBU their first GLVC win of the season as they move to 4-10 (1-2 GLVC) overall.
The first set was all Bearcats as they went on an 8-1 run for a 17-9 lead. Jewell went on a couple runs of their own but couldn't close the gap as SBU took the first one 25-17. Set two featured runs by the Cardinals as they held a six point lead before SBU went on another 8-1 run for a 16-15 lead. Jewell knotted the game up at 1 set a piece after finishing the set on a 5-0 run.
Sets three and four went the same way as the first two sets with each team having big runs. The Bearcats were down in set three but took the lead back with a 4-0 run to end the third. The Cardinals ran away with the fourth set winning by seven to force a winner take all fifth set. It started out scary for the Bearcats as they went down 2-5 but responded with their biggest run of the game (9-1) for an 11-6 lead. Jewell brought it to within two before freshman
Allie Hawk finished the game with a service ace.
Two Bearcats recorded a double-double in the game, first being senior
Katie Pogue who had 22 assists and 14 digs in the game. She tagged along six kills, a serving ace, and three assisted blocks for 8.5 points. Freshman
Gabriela Dupree led the team in kills with the other double-double of 17 kills and 12 digs. The team had 10 serving aces in the game with Hawk and
Chloe Chafins combining for a total of eight. Freshman
Julia Marinesi was second on the team in kills with nine scoring 10 total points.
Rory Stanley was big at the net leading the team with nine assisted blocks.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, October 4th as they finish their road trip at Rockhurst University. This game will take place at 3pm in Kansas City, Missouri.
