Bolivar, Mo. – The SBU Baseball team was back in action today as they hosted the Lewis University Flyers for their GLVC conference opener. The Bearcats came out on top today as they won both games 7-6 and 10-9 to make them 5-11 (2-0 GLVC) on the season.
In game 1, it would be a close game between the two teams with the Flyers taking the first lead of the day early on. The Bearcats, however, would turn the tide in the bottom of the 3rd inning after Sal Jacobo hit a single for Zeke Skinner and Dean Hagenhoff to run home for the Bearcat 4-2 lead. In the 4th inning, Trey Mungin hit a homerun to right field to add to the momentum and strengthen the lead to 5-3. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the 6th inning when Skinner hit his 3rd homerun of the season, now 9 away from the SBU career home record. Sal Jacobo secured the win and the save for the Bearcats as he came in with just one out to get in the top of the 9th. Eli Smock started snagged the win for Southwest Baptist pitched for 6 innings with 2 strikeouts only allowing two hits and one earned run.
In game 2, Jake Fuller started on the mound for SBU before being relieved by Kayden Lewis who pitched for 3 innings, recording the win in SBU's 10-9 victory. Cade Langford would finish on the mound as he pitched for the last 2 innings with 2 strikeouts. Despite an initial lead by the Flyers, the Bearcats found their rhythm again and recorded 8 unanswered runs for a commanding 10-4 lead in the 4th inning. The Flyers tried to make a comeback late in the game, but it would not be enough against the Bearcat defense as Langford struck out the last Flyer to secure their second conference win of the day and record his first save of the season. Cole Reece, Tre Mungin, and Jacobo tied each other with 2 RBI's a piece for a team high.
Jacobo had an impressive day for the Bearcats as he had three hits with Four RBI's and a pitching save. Skinner also showed off his hitting prowess with a home run and two doubles to go along with his three RBI's.
Southwest Baptist will be back in action tomorrow as they continue their first conference series against the Flyers. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM at Dodson Field.
