Bolivar, Mo. – The SBU women's basketball team bounced back with a thrilling 81-80 victory over the William Jewell Cardinals Saturday afternoon. This win moves them to 4-5 (2-2 GLVC) on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- There were 12 lead changes & 12 ties throughout the entire game
- Odett Schlegl opened the game making back-to-back three pointers breaking a two-game field goal drought
- SBU would soon take a 3-point lead followed by a quick Jewell 4-point lead; which led to the Cardinals leading 21-17 after 10 minutes
- Cardinals held onto that lead until the 3-minute mark when Amber Storr tied the game at 32
- The tie was short lived as Jewell led at half 39-37
- Six points from Tori Hamilton in the early minutes of half two, kept SBU within reach trailing by four
- Bearcats took their first lead since the early minutes of the game at 2:51 left in 3rd quarter off a three-pointer from Storr
- Both teams finished the third quarter tied adding to the drama and intensity
- SBU held a three-point lead early into the 4th
- There were two more lead changes until the game became a free throw challenge with SBU leading 77-76
- Cardinals would hit three free throws to SBU's one giving them a 79-78 lead with 22 seconds remaining
- A foul with just under 9 seconds left, put Kristin Edmonds at the line where she would make 1 of 2 to tie it up at 79
- A wild final seconds featured a Jewell turnover and foul, with Edmonds making both free throws
- An SBU foul in which the Cardinals shooter only made 1 of 2 giving SBU the win
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hamilton led the team in scoring with 19 points and was 1 rebound shy of her third straight double-double
- Schlegl and Storr tied each other with 15 points
- Kristin Edmonds notched 12 points with six from the charity stripe
- The team as a whole shot 52.7% from the field & 37.5% from three
- Bearcats outrebounded the Cardinals 38-20
