Joplin, Mo. – The SBU men's basketball team took the Lions of Missouri Southern into overtime on the road but fell 87-89. That moves them to 1-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bearcats fell behind in the early moments trailing by as much as 15
- An 11-0 run in the final three minutes of the half made it 42-44 going into the locker room
- The first three points in that run was significant as it game Mitch Ganote the All-Time assist record with his 509th
- The teams continued to trade baskets early in the 2nd half, but the Lions held the lead all the way through
- Senior David Hector hit back-to-back three pointers making it a 3-point game with 7:39
- Trailing by two with 31 seconds left, Ganote stole the ball and made a fast break layup to send it into overtime
- The Lions got an early bucket into overtime and led by as many as three
- SBU would tie the game three more times including a deep three pointer from Drenin Dinkins with 9 seconds remaining
- An untimely foul with 1.8 seconds on the clock gave the Lions two free throws in which they knocked down both to win the game
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ganote recorded his 20th career double-double with a team high 19 points and 10 assists
- He also broke the All-Time assists record which has held for 37 years; Daren Kirksey had the record in 117 games played and Ganote broke it in 112
- Sophomore Jevin Sullivan recorded his first double-double as a Bearcat with 14 points and 11 rebounds
- Hector had a strong game scoring 12 points off 75% shooting from three and pulled down 8 rebounds
- Drenin Dinkins and Bayley Crawford each scored double figures with 15 points and 13 points respectively
- The team hit 14 three pointers in the game, the most since February 11th, 2023
- Rebounds were dead even at 41 a piece but SBU outscored the Lions in second chance points 22-7
UP NEXT
SBU will now return home for a three game home stand beginning this Thursday, November 21
st. They will host Harding University who were picked to finish 5
th in the Great American Conference. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00pm in the Meyer Center.
