Quincy, Ill. - This Friday afternoon, the SBU Women's soccer team started off their road weekend with another conference matchup. They faced Quincy University and came away with a 1-0 win, defeating the hawks for the first time since 2014.
Sophomore Emma Burton scored her first collegiate goal on a header in the final 5 minutes of the first half. The corner came from Senior Sophia Lanzafame, recording her first collegiate assist. The game remained scoreless after, and the Bearcats took home their first conference win.
"I am incredibly proud of our team. We played a quality opponent who moved the ball well and were organized. Coming into the game missing some players due to injury, to come out and fight and battle like we did and get the win is massive. Emma Burton came on playing a position she doesn't normally play, raised the level, won a corner, and then scored the corner. It was very reflective of the response from our team to the adversity we have faced this week. I am very excited for us to go again on Sunday, as we are seeing all the work we have been putting in pay off," Head Coach Andrew Percic said.
Freshman Keeper Cece Alexander returned back to the starting lineup after an injury. Alexander added a second shutout under her belt, tying a season high 10 saves against the Hawks.
The Bearcats will return to action on Sunday, October 13th as they face Upper Iowa University. The game will take place in Fayette, Iowa at Harms-Eischeid Stadium with a kickoff scheduled for 12:00 pm.
