Bearcats Battle Back for Comeback Win Over Miners

Bolivar, MO. – The SBU Women's Basketball was back at home tonight as they hosted the Missouri S&T Miners. The Bearcats started off to a slow start but would fight their way back for a comeback win, beating the Miners 81-74, winning four out of their last five conference games. They move to 8-6 (4-4 GLVC) on the season.

SBU struck first taking the early lead, but they would struggle to pull away from the Miners in the first quarter. As the first half went on, the Miners started to pull away from the Bearcats finishing the half with SBU trailing 34-42. In the second half, it would be the Miners who would start off strong, creating the biggest lead of the game, up by 14 points. However, the Bearcats were not ready to go down without a fight as they ended the third quarter only down by 6 points. It wouldn't be until there was less than 5 minutes in the game when junior transfer Zaakyaa Young would drive to the net for a layup, giving the Bearcats the lead. From then on, SBU locked it down on defense, only allowing the Miners to 5 points before the final buzzer went off for the SBU comeback.

The Bearcats were led by junior Tori Hamilton recording her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Behind Hamilton, senior Karlee Holland struggled at the start beginning the game 0-4, but came up big defensively taking two charges in the second half and recorded 11 points. Sophomore Kristin Edmonds had to step up for the bearcats in place of Milena Fromming who missed the game due to injury. Edmonds played 30 minutes recording 11 points along with three assists and two steals. Senior Kallyn Stumbo who has been consistent for the Bearcats this season, finished with 9 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and three assists.

Southwest Baptist will be back in action on Saturday January 13th, as they look to extend their two-game win streak. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM at the Meyer Sports Center as they host the Maryville Saints.
