Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist volleyball hosted the Missouri S&T Miners in a thriller of a home opener. The two conference opponents battled all the way to five sets where the Bearcats came out on top winning set five 15-9. Their second straight victory over the miners moves them to 8-7 (1-2 GLVC) on the season.
SBU started out strong winning the first set 26-24, then quickly fell behind dropping the next two sets. A spark from the bench led the Bearcats to winning set four 25-17 then claiming victory a set later.
The Bearcats felt generous as they hosted a block party for the Miners with a total of 40 assisted blocks. Freshman Chandler Lawrence led the entire team with 12 assisted blocks. Ella Rademaker and Rory Stanley each had eight assisted blocks and Sydney McNeil had seven.
Senior Loran Pritchett had a double-double while leading the team in kills with 15 and 13 digs. Sophomore Bailey Lasater had an incredible game with a 20+ double-double. Lasater led the team in assists with 23 and in digs with 20.
The spark off the bench came from senior Deryan Simpson and junior Julia Becker. Simpson had five kills for a hitting percentage of .286 and contributed four assisted blocks. Becker had a near double-double as she recorded 11 assists and nine digs.
Southwest Baptist returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Maryville University. They take on the Saints in the Meyer Wellness Center at 3:00 PM.
