Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU women's soccer finished non-conference play today against William Woods University. The Bearcats came on strong, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes, taking a quick 2-0 lead. They would tag on four more goals defeating the Owls 6-0, the largest victory in over 15 years. That win moves SBU to 2-2-1 on the season.
"Strong complete team performance today." Head Coach Stefan Skillman said, "It was fun to see multiple players scoring goals and knowing that those opportunities are coming because of work from other teammates."
Junior Ashlynn Robinson opened the scoring with the first goal of her career off a great cross from Tamerra Gantt. Gantt would add two more goals to the Bearcats total with a career-high in goals and points with 5. The sophomore heads into conference play with her best season so far already with 3 goals and more minutes played than the entirety of last year.
Freshman Savannah Green tagged on her second goal of the season. Junior Abby Youngblood scored the second goal of her career off a rocket that went off the bottom of the crossbar, from beyond the 18-yard box, bouncing into the back of the net. The Bearcats lone second half goal came from junior transfer Kylie Murie who scored an olimpico, a goal straight from a corner kick.
Another big story is the women's soccer defense who has shutout their opponent in 3 straight games. This is the first time since 2014 that the team has held their opponents scoreless for 270 straight minutes. "It is exciting to see that our goalkeepers and our defense are able to put together three straight consistent shutouts against multiple opponents with different styles of press and play."
Southwest Baptist begin conference play this Friday as they host the Greyhounds of Indianapolis. The game is scheduled to take place at 4:00 PM on the SBU soccer field.
