Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU football team had their homecoming game at Plaster Stadium this afternoon. Over 2,000 SBU Bearcats current, past, and future showed up to watch the football team defeat McKendree University. Southwest Baptist scored won by a final score of 24-17, moving to 2-4 (1-1 GLVC) on the season.
The Bearcats had a whopping first quarter, scoring 17 unanswered points. One of the two touchdowns came from a punt block return for a touchdown by sophomore Samuel Steffe. Southwest Baptist had two blocked punts in the game. The winning touchdown came from a Riley Walker pass to Rodrick Weaver late in the 2nd quarter.
It was the SBU defense that came up big in the 2nd half completing stop after stop only allowing McKendree to score once. Senior Jeremiah Scroggins had a career day leading all with 13 total tackles, that includes two tackles for loss for three total yards. Senior Brenden Smith also had a big day with an interception, a breakup, and four total tackles.
Southwest Baptist will continue their conference play at home next Saturday against Missouri S&T. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm at Plaster Stadium.
