Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU football team returned home this afternoon looking to upset the #21 team in the Nation, Truman State Bulldogs. The Bearcats completed the upset defeated Truman State for the second time in three years, winning 20-17. That win moves SBU to 3-6 (2-3 GLVC) on the season.
For the first time in Head Coach Robert Clardy's tenure, the Bearcats defeated a ranked team. The cloudy and rainy afternoon mixed in with a weather delay, played to the Bearcats favor as they were able to run the ball for over 200 yards. This led to the Bearcats taking control of the time of possession.
Senior Abel Carter returned to form for the Bearcats today rushing for a total of 185 yards leading all other players by over 100. He averaged 6.2 yards across his 30 attempts and ran for 2 touchdowns. His longest ran came in the 1st quarter when he ran for 31 yards and an SBU touchdown.
Junior Logan Turner had another strong outing for the Bearcats knocking down 2 of his 3 field goals. His second field goal might have been the biggest one of his career as he hit the game winning field goal in the final seconds of the game. Despite the attempt to ice the Nations' best kicker from the Bulldogs, Turner sank his 31-yard field goal right down the middle of the uprights giving SBU the 20-17 victory.
Southwest Baptist will take this victory to the road as they head to Liberty, Missouri to take on William Jewell Cardinals. The game will take place next Saturday at Liberty North High School at 1:00 PM.
