Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Women's Soccer team hosted the Northern State Wolves in their first home game of the season this afternoon. The Bearcats ended the Wolves perfect 2-0 record by defeating them 1-0. They end non-conference play with a record of 1-2-1.
"Another fun opportunity to play and learn." Head Coach
Stefan Skillman said, "The girls got a great goal and they fought to create more chances and protect the lead they had. Very proud of the work they put in today."
The lone goal of the game began with the hustle of Freshman
Abbey Klund forcing the goalkeeper to come way out and clear the ball which ended on the feet of Junior
Allyson Lieber. This gave Lieber the perfect opening to rocket a ball right by the keeper and in the back of the net from around 40 yards out.
The one goal held up because of the Bearcat defense and goalkeeper
Ashlynn Edison who posted her first career shutout. She made six saves on the day using both her hands and her nose. Midway through the second half Edison put her body on the line, taking a ball to the face keeping the shutout intact.
"I'm very proud of this team and their commitment to the grind." Edison said, "It's awesome to see everything in practice come together. I'm super excited to go into conference with a win under us."
The Bearcats begin conference play one week from today when they travel to Kirksville, Missouri to take on the Truman State Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
