Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Football team returned home to take on Lake Erie College this afternoon. The Bearcats weathered the Storm winning the game 52-31. That win moves them to 2-2 on the season.
"Today was a great team win for our program." Head Coach
Robert Clardy said, "Saw us improve in some areas we've been stressing throughout the week in practice, and it paid off. Have some stuff we must continue clean up before we play a very good Indianapolis team next weekend."
The Bearcats opened the scoring early with a touchdown in the first three minutes. Less than two minutes later the Storm tied the game at seven. It would remain tied until
Curtis Cuillard scored his second touchdown of the game in the early minutes of the 2
nd quarter to take a 14-7 lead. Southwest Baptist didn't look back from there scoring five more touchdowns throughout the game.
Cooper Callis threw for over 300 yards for the 8
th time in his SBU career also notching five touchdowns.
Abel Carter ran for a total of 130 yards across 17 carries. Senior
Curtis Cuillard had a career high day with 142 reception yards and four touchdowns. Those four TDs are the second most TDs by a receiver in a single game in SBU history.
"Cooper did a great job managing the game and making great decisions with the football." Clardy said, "He was very efficient, and the offensive line did a great job which allowed him to put the ball down the field. Curtis had a big day and took advantage of some mismatches. They were giving us single coverage in certain situations and he and Coop capitalized."
"We played great in all phases today and it showed on the scoreboard" Cuillard said, "We definitely have some things we gotta clean up but I'm proud of the way we fought. Back to work on Monday!!
SBU begins conference play next Saturday, October 21
st as they travel to University of Indianapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM Central Standard time.
