Bolivar, Mo. – The SBU women's basketball team opened their 20223-23 campaign today against Trevecca Nazarene. The Bearcats got off to a hot start leading after the first quarter by 16 and despite a strong effort from the Trojans, SBU held on and won 75-72. That win moves them to 1-0 on the season.
"We are a really good team and we are really talent and we have a lot of really good weapons but we are still learning a lot." Head Coach
Kelsey Keizer said, "It's still early and we have a lot of new pieces and we are putting a lot of things together… By no means a perfect performance but I'm proud of our group, proud of our toughness and I am so encouraged by the positive things we see. This is going to be a good team and a fun team to follow"
Four different Bearcats scored in double-digits, but were led by Sophomore
Emma Perry who scored a career high 21 points. Those 21 points came off of a career high 6 three pointers made, where she went 6-7 from beyond the arc. Her 85% shooting from beyond the arc was second on the team behind Junior Milena Fromming who shot a perfect 4-for-4 from three. The Bearcats had a total fo 13 three's on the game.
"Shooting is contagious and we love it when it is contagious within our own team." Keizer said, "I think that happened in the first half, we were just hitting three after three after three…I thought Emma played really solid for us, played a lot of minutes. Was just confident to keep shooting, keep knocking those things down and really gave us the edge we needed on the offensive end to keep us on top and finish this game out."
The Bearcats will return to action in the Meyer Sports Center as they take on Kentucky Wesleyan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
