Quincy, Ill. - In their first contest of the new year, SBU traveled to Quincy to face the Hawks Thursday evening. Quincy managed to hold off SBU, handing the Bearcats a 73-69 loss to move the team to 9-2 (3-1 GLVC) on the year.
Quincy was first to get on the board, hitting a three early.
Mitch Ganote followed shortly after to get SBU going, then
RJ Crawford, Ganote, and
Jalil Beaubrun scored to give SBU a 9-3 lead. The Hawks battled back and regained the lead, holding on to it for a remainder of the half and taking a 6-point lead into halftime.Â
Again, it was the Hawks scoring first in the period, taking an 8-point lead. However,
Mitch Ganote and
Jalil Beaubrun chipped away early to stay in it. Right at the 10-minute mark,
Quinn Nelson scored a bucket and was fouled, completing the and-one play and cutting Quincy's lead to just one. With 3:10 on the clock, Nelson drained a big three to even things up at 59. The hosts found the momentum and carried it to the finish, ending with a 73-69 final.
RJ Crawford led all scorers with 17 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. Guards
Quinn Nelson and
Mitch Ganote finished with 16 points each, and
Jalil Beaubrun recorded his first double-double with a lucky 13 points and 13 rebounds. Despite the loss, SBU won the rebound battle 36-23.Â
SBU continues their road trip and will face Southern Indiana on Saturday at 3:00 PM.Â
