SBU Football Takes Down Lake Erie on the Road

Painesville, Ohio – The Bearcat Football team was on the road for their fourth competition of the year, facing Lake Erie College in their final non-conference matchup of the year. SBU scored first but came from behind in the second half to win the game 28-20. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 1-3 (0-0 GLVC).

Both teams swapped three-and-outs to start the game, but SBU made their second drive count. Cooper Callis found Jarrett Massie for a big gain, and Abel Carter punched it in for the score to take a 7-0 lead. The Storm responded with two scores of their own to take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first. Midway through the second quarter, SBU began another solid drive. On 2nd and 8, Callis connected with Jordan Kent for 18 yards. A few plays later on third down, Callis extended the drive with his legs, taking off for a 15-yard gain. He later found Preston Carson in the end zone to tie the score at 14 all. Just before the half, Lake Erie drove the field and took a 20-14 lead heading into the break.

The Storm got the ball to open the second half, but the SBU defense forced the hosts to punt. The Bearcats then drove the field, ending in a Cooper Callis to Cassian Foreman touchdown, giving SBU a 21-20 lead. On the next SBU drive, Callis connected with Foreman again, this time for 59 yards, setting the Bearcats up deep in Storm territory. The drive was capped off with a 10-yard Jarrett Massie touchdown reception from Callis. Lake Erie began driving down the field on the ensuing possession, but Sloan Roller picked off the Storm quarterback to keep the score 28-20 in favor of SBU. After an unsuccessful possession by SBU, the Storm got the ball back and failed to reach the end zone on four downs from the SBU 8-yard line. With 3:14 left in the game, Lake Erie got the ball once more and started moving the ball. As they were on the SBU 24, Ryan Jones forced a fumble and recovered the ball to seal the game, 28-20 for the Bearcats.

Cooper Callis had another strong performance, completing 23-35 passes for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. Cassian Foreman finished with 95 yards on 5 catches and a touchdown. Jarrett Massie also had 4 catches for 64 yards and a score. On the ground, Abel Carter rushed 12 times for 54 yards and a touchdown. The SBU defense was led once again by Coleton Smith, collecting another 19 tackles on the game, 1 of those going down as a loss. Ryan Jones had 2 tackles, both for losses, as well as a fumble forced and recovered.

SBU returns home next week as they host the University of Indianapolis to open GLVC play. The homecoming game will kick off at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 2 at Plaster Stadium.
