Volleyball Drops Pair to Open Denton Volleyfest

Denton, Tex. – The SBU Volleyball team was back in action Friday night, taking on Southwestern Oklahoma State and Texas Woman's University at the Denton Volleyfest. Despite the 3-1 and 3-0 losses, both matches were very close. With the losses, SBU moves to 4-2 (0-0 GLVC) on the year.
 
Match One
SBU got off to a slow start in the first set, dropping the first 6 points of the match. Although rallying back to down 12-10, the Bearcats dropped the first set 25-17. After trailing 5-2 in the second set, SBU went on a 7-point streak to take a solid lead, ending in favor of SBU 25-18. The third set was very back and forth, eventually won by SWOSU 25-23. The fourth set was also very close, but SBU fell 25-23 again to drop the match 3-1. Ashley Lasher (13 kills), Loran Pritchett (33 assists), Lauren Compton (12 digs), and Sydney Ernsbarger (4 blocks) all led their respective categories between both teams.
 
Match Two
Against Texas Woman's, the Bearcats found themselves trailing 20-9 in the first set. They tried to rally back, but the comeback couldn't be completed, resulting in a 25-18 score. The second set went back and forth, but also ended in favor of TWU, 25-22. In a tight third set, TWU scored the final five points to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0. Rachel Francis led the team with 7 kills in the match, Loran Pritchett had 15 assists, and Aleena Peterson recorded 14 digs.
 
The Denton Volleyfest continues on Saturday, as the team takes on Ouachita Baptist at 11:30 AM and Texas Permian Basin at 4:30 PM.
