Midland, Mich. – The women's tennis team had their opening regional tournament match this morning, facing the Ferris State Bulldogs. SBU defeated Ferris State 4-1, advancing to the Regional Championship tomorrow.
Ferris State jumped to an early 1-0 lead in doubles play, taking court 1 by a score of 6-4.
Catarina Zheng and
Elsa Pascual evened things up, winning an extremely tight match, 7-6. Another close doubles match was won by
Lola Cincunegui and
Diana Cabrera on court 3, giving SBU a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.
Dona Abohabaga, recently ranked #41 in singles play, won her match on court 1, 6-1, 6-2 to begin singles play.
Constanca Crespo followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory to put SBU one point away from the win. The Bulldogs won court 6 to make the score 3-1, but
Elsa Pascual finished her match with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court 5 to win the match.
Diana Cabrera was one game from winning on court 2 (6-2, 5-2) when the match was called.
With the win, SBU advances to face #1 nationally ranked Indianapolis in the Regional Championship. That match is scheduled for 1:30 PM CST on Sunday, May 9. Sunday's match will be the fourth meeting between the teams this season, the winner advancing to the national tournament.
