Romeoville, Ill. – The SBU men's tennis team played in the GLVC Finals Sunday afternoon, taking on #5 nationally ranked Indianapolis. Pulling a big upset, the Bearcats defeated the Greyhounds 4-2 to win the GLVC Championship and punch their ticket to the Regional Tournament.
The SBU duo of
Adham Gaber and
Youssef Nabil got things rolling with a 6-3 victory on court 2 of doubles play. Continuing that momentum,
Carlos Corser and
Max Sanoja claimed the doubles point with a big 6-1 win on court 1.
UINDY evened the score at 1-1 after claiming the point on court 2, but
Alvaro Nunez helped regain the lead for SBU thanks to his 6-3, 6-0 victory on court 3.
David Szeri followed with a strong 6-2, 6-4 court 4 win, putting SBU one point from a championship. Court 5 was won by UINDY, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Bearcats, but the 2021 GLVC Player of the Year,
Adham Gaber, came up clutch to pull off the upset. He fell behind 2-6 in the first set, but won the second set 6-3 and took the tie break in the final set 7-6 (7-5).
The 2021 spring season marked the team's first full season as members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They made the move in the 2019-20 school year, but the spring season was cut short due to COVID. The NCAA DII tennis selection show will be on Tuesday, May 4 at 7:00 PM.
