Springfield, Mo. – The SBU teams were competing just south of Bolivar against their Highway 13 rivals, Drury. The men's team upset the #14 nationally ranked and #2 regionally ranked Panthers, 5-2. That win boosts them above .500 to 9-8 on the season.
Drury won the first doubles match on court 1, but
Adham Gaber and
Ilyes Khelifi dominated their opponents 6-1 on court 2 to even things up.
David Szeri and
Alvaro Nunez cleaned things up with a 6-3 victory on court 3, handing SBU a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Panthers were quick to strike back and even things at 1-1 after court 2 finished playing. Responding with a strong 6-1 6-3 victory on court 1,
Adham Gaber gave SBU a 2-1 lead and picked up his 13
th singles win on the season.
Alvaro Nunez followed, losing the first set 6-7, but winning his second set 6-3 and third set 6-2 to help SBU go up 3-1. Winning the match point was
David Szeri, coming from behind to defeat his opponent 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on court 4. Drury's second point of the match came on court 5, but SBU's
Ilyes Khelifi gave SBU an insurance point with a three-set victory on court 6.
The team will be back at home on Monday, April 5 as they host Lindenwood for a 1:00 PM start time.
