Bolivar, Mo. – The SBU Softball team hosted their third and fourth straight home games Sunday afternoon, playing under the sun after their Saturday games were postponed due to rain. The McKendree Bearcats were the opponents, taking both games 5-0 and 3-2. Those losses drop SBU to 2-26 (1-13 GLVC) on the season.
Game One
McKendree didn't waste any time getting on the board, scoring one run in the first. After a scoreless second, McKendree plated another in the third.
Emma Ezzell helped get SBU in the hits column with a leadoff single in the bottom of the third, but wasn't able to move up in the inning. After another run was scored by the visitors in the fourth,
Renae Gillmore singled and later advanced to third, but was stranded there.
Abby Henson kept the fifth inning alive with a two-out single, but nothing more would come of it. McKendree scored again in the sixth and once in the seventh for a 5-0 final score.
Game Two
SBU nearly escaped the first unharmed as
Emma Wood struck out the McKendree batter, but the ball got away and allowed a run to score. With two outs in the first,
Emma Ezzell lined a double to right center, but wouldn't advance further. After a couple quiet innings, SBU picked things up with a
Morgan McMullin single in the third.
Renae Gillmore followed McMullin with a double down the left field line that moved McMullin up to third. She then scored on an error by the shortstop, tying the game at 1-1. In the very next inning, McKendree put one over the fence to regain a 2-1 lead. The fifth inning was full of small ball, as SBU was able to plate a run thanks to smart baserunning. A 2-2 score forced the game into extras, where McKendree scored a run in the 8
th.
Renae Gillmore led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but a screamer of a line drive by
Emma Ezzell gave McKendree a double play opportunity, ending the game 3-2.
On the day,
Renae Gillmore was 4-7 at the plate, two of those being doubles.
The Bearcats will play again tomorrow, Monday, April 12 as they make up the doubleheader against Missouri-St. Louis that was originally scheduled for Saturday. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM at the SBU Softball Field.
