Pittsburg, Kan. – The SBU softball team visited an old rival Wednesday afternoon, competing against the Pitt State Gorillas. The MIAA team squeezed out a 2-1 victory in game one and an 11-2 win in game two, putting SBU's record at 2-22 (1-9 GLVC) on the year.
Game One
Both teams struggled to put together any offense until the third inning, when PSU led off with a single. SBU followed the next half inning with their first hit, coming from
Rylee Lunn. She poked one through the left side and managed to steal second, but wasn't able to score, keeping the score at 0-0. The Gorillas played small ball in the 5
th and scored 2 runs, both recorded as unearned runs.
Katlynn McConville led off the top of the 7
th with a double to begin the rally for SBU. Following a couple of outs,
Renae Gillmore drove in McConville to cut the deficit in half. Gillmore stole second to advance into scoring position, but PSU closed out the game 2-1.
Reilly Rupert went all 6.0 innings for SBU, surrendering just 3 hits and not allowing a single earned run.
Game Two
Pitt State got the bats going much quicker in game two, scoring 3 runs in their first opportunity.
Meadow Vassar picked up SBU's first hit with two away in the second, unable to advance past first. The Gorillas really broke things open in the 2
nd inning, scoring 6 runs to take a 9-0 lead. Another run scored for the hosts in the 3
rd, but SBU was able to get on the board in the 4
th.
Katlynn McConville singled up the middle to lead things off, and
Nicole Horstman was able to reach on an error.
Alissa Collette followed with a single, scoring McConville and advancing Horstman to third. The Gorillas made another error on the next batter, bringing home Horstman and cutting the deficit to 10-2. One more run was scored by Pitt State before the game was ended via the run rule in the 5
th, 11-2.
Meadow Vassar was a perfect 2-2 and
Alissa Collette went 1-1 in her pinch hit at-bat, accounting for three of SBU's four hits in the game.
SBU returns home and returns to conference play with a doubleheader against William Jewell on Saturday, April 3 at 12:00 PM.
