Montgomery, Ala. – The SBU Tennis teams were down south Thursday, competing against Auburn Montgomery and West Alabama. The women's team fell to Auburn Montgomery in a very close 4-3 finish, and to #16 West Alabama by a 5-2 final score. The Bearcats are now 8-5 on the season.
Match One
The Warhawks began the match with the doubles point victory, winning on courts 1 and 2.
Diana Cabrera and
Lola Cincunegui defeated their opponents on court 3 by a score of 6-4, but the point had already been taken.
Taking a 2-0 lead was AUM, winning on court 1 in singles play, but
Diana Cabrera put the Bearcats on the board with a solid 6-2 6-4 victory on court 2. Following in Cabrera's success,
Constanca Crespo and
Catarina Zheng also won on courts 3 and 4 to put SBU ahead 3-2. However, the Warhawks battled back and won on courts 5 and 6 in extremely close third sets to win the very tight match, 4-3.
Match Two
Doubles play started similar to the first match of the day, with a victory by the opponents.
Diana Cabrera and
Constanca Crespo were ahead 3-1 on court 1, but it was unfinished as the other two doubles matches were won by West Alabama.
The Tigers claimed their second point of the day on court 2 in singles play, but
Catarina Zheng defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 on court 3 to get SBU going. On court 1,
Diana Cabrera continued her strong day with a 7-6, 6-0 two-set sweep to tie things up at 2-2. West Alabama would go on to win the remainder of the singles matches, giving them a 5-2 victory.
The women's team will take on the University of Montevallo in Columbus, GA on Friday, March 19 beginning at 1:00 PM.
