Women's Tennis Advances with Upset of #5 Columbus State

Oklahoma City, Okla. – The SBU Women's Tennis team was in Oklahoma City Friday afternoon after they were invited to compete in the ITA Indoor Nationals. In the first round, the Bearcats upset the #5 team in the nation, Columbus State, 4-3. In the tournament, SBU was the 7 seed and CSU was the 2 seed.
 
The Cougars won the first match in doubles play on court 2, but SBU bounced back with a 6-4 victory on court 1 from Dona Abohabaga and Constanca Crespo. CSU went on to win the doubles point with a 7-6 win on court 3.
 
Abohabaga continued her strong efforts on the day, putting SBU on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 sweep on court 1. Constanca Crespo helped give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead thanks to her 6-3, 7-5 win on court 5. Columbus State won on court 3 to even the score once again, 2-2. On court 2, it was Diana Cabrera giving SBU their third point of the day, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Once again, the score became tied with a CSU victory on court 6, but Catarina Zheng fought hard and outlasted her opponent on court 4 for the 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 victory to clinch the match for SBU, 4-3.
 
Angelo State University (6 seed) defeated the University of West Florida (3 seed) 4-3 to advance to the second round. SBU will take on Angelo State tomorrow, Saturday, February 27 at 11:15 AM in Oklahoma City.
