Kansas City, Mo. – Southwest Baptist scored a second half goal to pull even and eventually finish in a tie with preseason conference favorite Rockhurst.
The match started with an SBU kickoff and
Lexi Lanzafame got the first shot for the Bearcats at the 10:44 mark. Rockhurst would score in the 20
th minute but SBU would hold them to just the one goal despite 8 shots from the Hawks. The Bearcats held their own against the Hawks in the second half with 9 shots of their own to Rockhurst's 10 shots.
Ashlyn Gibbs helped keep Rockhurst in check with 8 saves for the game. Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst would find themselves tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, forcing overtime. The first overtime period was all SBU with the Bearcats outshooting the Hawks 2-0. Each team would have a save in the second overtime to keep it knotted up at 1 and force the tie.
Reagen Edwards and
Lexi Lanzafame paced the Bearcats on the attack with 4 shots each and one of Lanzafame's finding the back of the net. Reagen Edwards assisted on the lone goal for the Bearcats.
Alexis Hale also had 3 shots of her own with 2 of those being on target.
Ashlyn Gibbs held the defense down with 8 saves on 21 shots faced. The Bearcats played very disciplined with 0 offsides in the match while pulling Rockhurst offsides 12 times.
The Bearcats will be back in action on March 5
th at 6:00 PM in Bolivar when they face the Panthers of Drury University.
