Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Women's Basketball team went up against the Missouri Baptist Spartans Monday morning, continuing their non-conference schedule. The Bearcats defeated the Spartans by a score of 72-40, making the Bearcats record 6-4 (2-1 GLVC) for the season.
Within the five minutes into the game, the Spartans had a three-point lead with the score at 7-4. Rachel Tippens made a three-pointer followed by a free throw to take the lead. Kelsey Blakemore followed with a jumper for two points to make the score 10-7. Late in the first quarter, Faith Gilkey made a shot for three points to keep the lead. With fifty seconds left, Mary Rose Foster made a fastbreak layup to give SBU an 18-10 lead after one. In the second quarter, Kyleigh Vaught made a layup and Micah Clayton made a jumper for two points to extend their lead to 25-11. In the last seconds of the second quarter, Mary Rose Foster made a layup to give the Bearcats a ten-point lead going into halftime with the score at 33-23. The Bearcats came out of the break strong, holding the Spartans to just 5 points in the third quarter. Nyah Pettus made another layup to get things going in the fourth. Late in the fourth quarter, Kallyn Stumbo and Leikyn Walker both made three-pointers to help secure the win over the Spartans with the final 72-40.
Kyleigh Vaught led SBU in scoring with 11 points. Nyah Pettus was two points away from a double-double, scoring 8 points and 10 rebounds. Kelsey Blakemore had 8 points and 5 steals. Micah Clayton and Faith Gilkey also had 8 points. Mary Rose Foster, Emma Perry, Rachel Tippens, and Leikyn Walker had 6 points each. Kallyn Stumbo finished with 5 points with 3 steals. As a team, SBU had 39 rebounds and 19 assists, shooting 46% from the field.
Southwest Baptist will stay home to take on Hannibal-LaGrange on December 30 at 3 PM.
