Nashville, Tenn. - The SBU Women's Basketball team wrapped up their opening tournament Saturday afternoon, taking on the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans. The Bearcats came out on top of the Trojans with the score of 67-54. This pushes the Bearcats record to 1-1 for the season.
The Trojans had an early lead in the first quarter with the score at 8-4. Kyleigh Vaught then made a 3 pointer to make the game a 1-point game. Keeping that momentum going, the Bearcats took the lead at the end of the first quarter with Kelsey Blakemore's free throws. SBU kept the lead, but the Trojan were sure to stick around not too far behind. At the end of the second quarter, the score was 29-27 and the Bearcats still maintained the lead. SBU tried to pull away from the Trojans, but the game was still close at the end of the third quarter with the score at 45-44. In the fourth quarter, Miach Clayton made a layup and Kyleigh Vaught made a jump shot to extend SBU's lead. After that, the Bearcats started to pull away from the Trojans. At the end of the fourth quarter, Blakemore went to the line for free throws, which sealed the victory for the Bearcats with the final score of 67-54.
Kyleigh Vaught led both teams in scoring with 15 points and had 3 steals. Kelsey Blakemore was near a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Micah Clayton also had 14 points with 5 rebounds. As a team, SBU had 31 rebounds and 14 assists, shooting 40.0% from the field.
Southwest Baptist will be home to take on their former MIAA foe, Missouri Western on November 18 at 6 PM.
