Edmond, Okla. – The SBU Softball team opened their 2020 season with two losses at a neutral venue. They opened the day with a morning matchup against #15 ranked Cameron, falling 0-10 in 5 innings. Shortly after, Southeastern Oklahoma defeated the Bearcats 7-1, giving SBU an 0-2 start to the season.
Game One
Nationally ranked Cameron University jumped out to an early lead, scoring 4 in the first inning off a double and a homerun. SBU applied some pressure in the 1
st as well, loading the bases on three consecutive walks, but a pop out and a ground out ended the inning. The Aggies scored 1 run in the 3
rd and another in the 4
th before breaking the game open with another 4 runs in the 5
th. The Bearcats were unable to mount the comeback, ending 0-10 after 5 innings.
Janessa Rivera and
Nicole Horstman were responsible for SBU's two hits in the game.
Game Two
Aubry Hernandez was SBU's first baserunner against Southeastern Oklahoma, reaching on a single to right in the 2
nd inning.
Nicole Horstman led off the 3
rd inning with a base hit, but a strikeout and two fly outs ended the threat. In the bottom of the 3
rd, the Savage Storm had runners on 2
nd and 3
rd with one out, but an out at the plate made the second out and a fly out ended the inning with no damage done. Similar to the 3
rd, SBU led off the 4
th with a hit, a double by
Sam Moran.
Janessa Rivera later reached on a hit by pitch, but the score remained 0-0.
With two outs in the 5
th inning,
Renae Gillmore was hit by a pitch, brining
Megan Schellert to the plate. Schellert delivered with a huge RBI double to give SBU a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 5
th. Southeastern answered back, scoring 3 in the 5
th and 4 in the 6
th to make the final score 7-1 in favor of Southeastern.
Aubry Hernandez picked up 2 hits in the game.
Megan Schellert,
Sam Moran, and
Nicole Horstman each had a hit as well.
SBU continues play at the UCO/OCU tournament tomorrow, facing Colorado Christian at 10 AM, followed by #7 Central Oklahoma at 12 PM.
