Springfield, Mo. – The Softball team continued play Friday afternoon, competing in the Drury Invitational. In day one of the tournament, the Bearcats swept the day, picking up a 7-0 shutout win against Northeastern State, and an 8-3 victory over Wayne State. The two wins help SBU improve to 3-11 (0-0 GLVC) record.
Game One
SBU got things going early, scoring a run on a fielder's choice RBI from
Morgan McMullin. The game really broke open in the third.
Aubry Hernandez hit a double with one out, scoring
Sam Moran.
Emma Ezzell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring another run. The final run of the inning was scored on an error by the Riverhawks, giving SBU a 4-0 lead.
Nicole Horstman drove in SBU's 5
th run of the game with a double, scoring
Renae Gillmore, and
Emma Ezzell later came around to score to make it 6-0 SBU after 6 innings. In the 7
th,
Renae Gillmore doubled to score
Aubry Hernandez and make a 7-0 final score.
Sam Moran reached base 4 times in the game, going 2-3 with 2 walks.
Renae Gillmore was the other Bearcat with multiple hits.
Alexis Dock pitched the entire 7.0 innings, credited with the shutout win. She allowed just 4 hits in the victory.
Game Two
Sam Moran and
Megan Schellert led off with back-to-back infield singles, and
Morgan McMullin followed with a single to center to load the bases. An error by the shortstop scored Moran and Schellert to give SBU a 2-0 lead.
Emma Ezzell drove in one more in the inning on a sacrifice fly to left. The Wildcats got on the board in the 2
nd, cutting the lead to 3-1.
SBU loaded the bases in the 4
th with one out, and a fielder's choice scored another for the Bearcats, taking a 4-1 lead. It was in the 6
th inning that SBU jumped to a comfortable lead. It was senior
Emma Ezzell who launched a three-run home run to left, scoring
Renae Gillmore and
Taryn Elia.
Aubry Hernandez tacked on one more for SBU thanks to a triple to left, scoring
Morgan McMullin. Wayne State scored twice in the 7
th, but the Bearcats held on for the 8-3 victory.
Emma Ezzell drove in 4 runs in the win.
Megan Schellert and
Morgan McMullin each picked up 2 hits and 2 runs.
Emma Wood gave up just 1 earned run in her 7.0 innings pitched striking out 2 and allowing 0 walks.
The Bearcats continue play in the Drury Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, February 29 with games at 2 PM and 6 PM against Lincoln and Northeastern State.
