Louisville, Ky. - Ecstatic after defeating their rival, the Bearcats traveled to Louisville, Kentucky and took down the #1 team in the nation. SBU overcame a 17 point deficit to win their 5th straight game on the road against Bellarmine University 79-74. SBU moves to 14-3 (7-2 GLVC).
The Bearcats took an early 9-4 lead with a three pointer from Damian Prgomet. They kept the lead into the first media with bench points coming from Mitch Ganote and Juan Morales. The Knights came swinging, taking an eight point lead with 6 minutes remaining in the half. The Knights pushed their lead to 17 points, but a 3 from Quinn Nelson and a layup by Damian Prgomet made the deficit 12 at half.Â
The Bearcats came out of halftime going on a 9-2 run to bring the game within five. Knights soon pushed it to a seven point lead but a layup by Juan Morales and a transition three by Godfrey Rolle made it a two point game with 12:36 to go. Nelson hit two more three's in the next 6 minutes to keep they game close. The Bearcats took their first lead of the half with a three pointer by Mitch Ganote assisted by Brady Smith. One minute later Nelson hit another three to put SBU up two 66-64. After a bucket by the Knights, Smith hit a deep three pointer to give them a three point lead with 2:07 to go. The game was tied with 50 seconds remaining when Rolle drove baseline, kicked the ball out to Nelson and he knocked down his 6th three pointer of the game. It was all free throws from there as the Bearcats get their biggest win of the season with a score of 79-74.Â
Nelson led the Bearcats with 26 points shooting 69% from the field. Three other Bearcats made it to double digits including Damian Prgomet (15), Brady Smith (12), and Godfrey Rolle (10). Mitch Ganote dished out 6 assists to go along with his 7 points. The Bearcats shot over 50% for their 3rd game in a row, shooting 55.1% from the field. In the second half, SBU held NCAA Division II's third-best shooting team to just 38.5% from the field.Â
SBU looks to continue their hot 4 game win streak Saturday as they take on the University of Indianapolis. The game takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana and is scheduled to start at 2 PMÂ CST.
