Griffons Take Both Games in St. Joseph

St. Joseph, Mo. – SBU played a make-up series against Missouri Western Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Griffons twice, 8-0 and 5-4. The losses drop the Bearcats to 5-30 (2-8 MIAA) on the year.

Game One
The Bearcats almost had a very quick first inning, but Megan Schellert drew a two out walk. The Griffons were able to get the third out, no damage done. MWSU wasted no time getting their offense rolling, scoring 4 runs in their half of the 1st. After a short 2nd inning from SBU, Missouri Western scored another two runs, taking a 6-0 lead very early on.

Another quick half inning went by for the Bearcats, and the Griffons continued to add on to their lead, increasing to 7-0 at the end of 3 full innings. Yezzania Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to lead off the 4th inning, but three fly outs put an end to the offensive threat. MWSU scored their eighth and final run in the 4th, pushing their lead to 8-0. Nicole Horstman picked up the lone SBU hit in the 5th inning, driving a two out single to left center. Unfortunately, Missouri Western got the third out before SBU could score, ending the game via the run rule.

Game Two
Missouri Western got a base runner all the way to third in the 1st inning, but solid defense and pitching kept the Griffons off the scoreboard. Emily Hall put the Bearcats in the hits column with a single to left field with two outs in the 2nd, but she wouldn't advance any further. The Bearcats were almost out of a jam in the bottom of the 2nd, but an error allowed a run to score, putting MWSU up by one. They scored another in the 3rd, making it a 2-0 ball game.

Paige St. Pierre led off the 4th inning with a bunt for hit. Morgan McMullin followed her lead, singling through the left side and advancing St. Pierre into scoring position. The next batter moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt, but the Griffons got the next two outs before SBU could score. MWSU's lead jumped to 3-0, scoring another run in the 4th inning. After two quick outs in the 6th inning, Lauren Strobel extended the inning, reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman. Emily Hall and Nicole Horstman then hit back to back singles, putting SBU on the board and cutting the Griffon lead to 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th.

Megan Schellert hit a one out single down the right field line to spark SBU's offense in the final frame. After a second out, Morgan McMullin singled to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error, putting Schellert on third. Miranda Aguilar then came in clutch, smacking the ball for a double, evening the score at 3-3. Taryn Elia pinch ran for Aguilar, scoring on the next at-bat. Lauren Strobel drove a ball to right field, the fielder not able to handle the ball, scoring another Bearcat run and giving SBU their first lead of the day, 4-3. However, the Griffons walked off the game in the 7th, winning 5-4.

Morgan McMullin, Emily Hall, and Nicole Horstman each had a multi-hit game, collecting two hits each.

The Bearcats continue their road trip tomorrow, playing at William Jewell on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 PM.
