St. Joseph, Mo. – SBU played a make-up series against Missouri Western Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Griffons twice, 8-0 and 5-4. The losses drop the Bearcats to 5-30 (2-8 MIAA) on the year.
Game One
The Bearcats almost had a very quick first inning, but
Megan Schellert drew a two out walk. The Griffons were able to get the third out, no damage done. MWSU wasted no time getting their offense rolling, scoring 4 runs in their half of the 1
st. After a short 2
nd inning from SBU, Missouri Western scored another two runs, taking a 6-0 lead very early on.
Another quick half inning went by for the Bearcats, and the Griffons continued to add on to their lead, increasing to 7-0 at the end of 3 full innings.
Yezzania Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to lead off the 4
th inning, but three fly outs put an end to the offensive threat. MWSU scored their eighth and final run in the 4
th, pushing their lead to 8-0.
Nicole Horstman picked up the lone SBU hit in the 5
th inning, driving a two out single to left center. Unfortunately, Missouri Western got the third out before SBU could score, ending the game via the run rule.
Game Two
Missouri Western got a base runner all the way to third in the 1
st inning, but solid defense and pitching kept the Griffons off the scoreboard.
Emily Hall put the Bearcats in the hits column with a single to left field with two outs in the 2
nd, but she wouldn't advance any further. The Bearcats were almost out of a jam in the bottom of the 2
nd, but an error allowed a run to score, putting MWSU up by one. They scored another in the 3
rd, making it a 2-0 ball game.
Paige St. Pierre led off the 4
th inning with a bunt for hit.
Morgan McMullin followed her lead, singling through the left side and advancing St. Pierre into scoring position. The next batter moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt, but the Griffons got the next two outs before SBU could score. MWSU's lead jumped to 3-0, scoring another run in the 4
th inning. After two quick outs in the 6
th inning,
Lauren Strobel extended the inning, reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Emily Hall and
Nicole Horstman then hit back to back singles, putting SBU on the board and cutting the Griffon lead to 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 6
th.
Megan Schellert hit a one out single down the right field line to spark SBU's offense in the final frame. After a second out,
Morgan McMullin singled to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error, putting Schellert on third.
Miranda Aguilar then came in clutch, smacking the ball for a double, evening the score at 3-3.
Taryn Elia pinch ran for Aguilar, scoring on the next at-bat.
Lauren Strobel drove a ball to right field, the fielder not able to handle the ball, scoring another Bearcat run and giving SBU their first lead of the day, 4-3. However, the Griffons walked off the game in the 7
th, winning 5-4.
Morgan McMullin,
Emily Hall, and
Nicole Horstman each had a multi-hit game, collecting two hits each.
The Bearcats continue their road trip tomorrow, playing at William Jewell on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 PM.
