Topeka, Kan. – The Bearcats wrapped up their series against Washburn Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods defeated the Bearcats 17-1, moving SBU to 12-21 (6-15 MIAA).
The Bearcats scored just 3 batters into the game.
Caleb Sneed led off with a single up the middle, followed by a
Carl Schwettmann double.
Hunter Hisky drove Sneed in on a sacrifice fly to put SBU up 1-0 in the 1
st. The Ichabods responded in the 1
st, scoring one run to even the game at 1-1. Washburn continued their offensive success, scoring twice more in the 2
nd and three more times in the 3
rd, going ahead 6-1.
In the top of the 4
th,
Jackson Soule kept the inning alive with a two out single to center field, but nothing would come of the effort. Through 5 innings the Ichabods grew their lead to 9-1, scoring two runs in the 4
th and another in the 5
th.
Carl Schwettmann hit a one out single to center field, trying to get the offense rolling in the 6
th. After another out, Sam Avila drew a walk, and both Avila and Schwettmann moved up a base following a balk by the Ichabod pitcher. However, the Bearcats were unable to plate either runner, keeping a 9-1 score in favor of the home crew.
Washburn really broke open the game in their half of the 6
th, scoring 8 more runs to increase their lead to 17-1. SBU was unable to generate any offense in the 7
th, ending the game there via the run rule.
Carl Schwettmann was responsible for 2 of the 5 Bearcat hits, the other three coming from
Caleb Sneed, Sam Avila, and
Jackson Soule.
SBU returns home for their next series, hosting Missouri Southern on April 12-14 with game one starting at 3 PM.
