Maryville, Mo. – Southwest Baptist traveled north to compete against Northwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon. The purple Bearcats came home with a victory, narrowly defeating the green Bearcats 4-3. The win improves SBU to 11-2 and gives them a 2-0 MIAA record.
In doubles play, Northwest started with a win on court #2, and claimed the doubles point with a win on court #3. Although the point was already won,
Adham Gaber and
Raul Caballero finished their match on court #1, defeating their opponents handily, 6-2.
SBU was down heading into singles play, but they were not out.
Gyorgy Agoston claimed a victory on court #3 to open singles play, dropping only one game, 6-1 and 6-0 in two sets.
Adham Gaber continued his stellar freshman season, winning on court #3 against the #41 ranked player in the nation, 6-1 and 7-6 to give SBU a 2-1 lead. Northwest evened the score once again, winning on court #1.
Raul Caballero won the first set 6-3, but fell in three sets to the #9 player in the nation. On court #4,
David Szeri won a big match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to put SBU ahead 3-2.
Carlos Corser locked up the victory for SBU on court #5, defeating his opponent in two sets, 6-4 and 6-2. Northwest got their third point on court #6 after the match was already won by SBU.
The men's team is currently riding a 4 game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 21-7 in points over those games.
Gyorgy Agoston now has a 12-1 record in singles play this year, and
Adham Gaber also has a 12-1 record in singles.
The Bearcats return home for their next competition, hosting Ouachita Baptist on Friday, April 12 at 10 AM.
