Bearcats Even Series with Ichabods

Topeka, Kan. – The Bearcats evened the series with the Ichabods Saturday afternoon, winning 4-3 in game two. The win improves the Bearcats to 12-20 (6-14 MIAA) on the season.

Carl Schwettmann was the first SBU batter with a hit, driving one to right field in the 1st inning. Hunter Hisky followed with a single, putting runners on first and second. After a second out, Jackson Soule hit a single that scored Schwettman and put Hisky on third, giving SBU a 1-0 lead. Kyle Smith got the start for the Bearcats, retiring the first three Ichabod batters in a row.

Sam Avila singled to lead off the 2nd inning and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt, but a double play ended the inning. The Ichabods had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the 2nd, but a 4-6-3 double play got SBU out of the jam. The middle few innings went very quickly, not much offense going for either team. In the 6th, Caleb Sneed reached on an error by the shortstop to lead things off. A batter later, Hunter Hisky drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Noah Tucker followed with a single through the right side, loading the bases for Jackson Soule. He came up clutch, singling up the middle and driving in two runs to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th.

Again the Ichabods had two men on with one out, and again the Bearcats turned a double play, this one a 6-4-3 to end the inning. Brett Mitchell gave the Bearcats what would end up being their winning run in the 7th, smashing a home run to left field. Washburn got some momentum going and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th, cutting the SBU lead to 4-3. Drew Wagner came in for the 9th inning, getting the Ichabods to go down in order to end the game.

Kyle Smith was credited with the win, giving up just 3 hits in his outing. Three Bearcats had multi-hit games, Hunter Hisky, Jackson Soule, and Sam Avila. Soule was responsible for 3 of the 4 runs driven in.

The rubber match between the teams is set to start at 1 PM Sunday afternoon.
