Topeka, Kan. – The Bearcats evened the series with the Ichabods Saturday afternoon, winning 4-3 in game two. The win improves the Bearcats to 12-20 (6-14 MIAA) on the season.
Carl Schwettmann was the first SBU batter with a hit, driving one to right field in the 1
st inning.
Hunter Hisky followed with a single, putting runners on first and second. After a second out,
Jackson Soule hit a single that scored Schwettman and put Hisky on third, giving SBU a 1-0 lead.
Kyle Smith got the start for the Bearcats, retiring the first three Ichabod batters in a row.
Sam Avila singled to lead off the 2
nd inning and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt, but a double play ended the inning. The Ichabods had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the 2
nd, but a 4-6-3 double play got SBU out of the jam. The middle few innings went very quickly, not much offense going for either team. In the 6
th,
Caleb Sneed reached on an error by the shortstop to lead things off. A batter later,
Hunter Hisky drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
Noah Tucker followed with a single through the right side, loading the bases for
Jackson Soule. He came up clutch, singling up the middle and driving in two runs to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 6
th.
Again the Ichabods had two men on with one out, and again the Bearcats turned a double play, this one a 6-4-3 to end the inning.
Brett Mitchell gave the Bearcats what would end up being their winning run in the 7
th, smashing a home run to left field. Washburn got some momentum going and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8
th, cutting the SBU lead to 4-3.
Drew Wagner came in for the 9
th inning, getting the Ichabods to go down in order to end the game.
Kyle Smith was credited with the win, giving up just 3 hits in his outing. Three Bearcats had multi-hit games,
Hunter Hisky,
Jackson Soule, and Sam Avila. Soule was responsible for 3 of the 4 runs driven in.
The rubber match between the teams is set to start at 1 PM Sunday afternoon.
