Bearcats Split with Tigers

Bolivar, Mo. – The Bearcats hosted the Tigers of Fort Hays State University Saturday afternoon, playing a rescheduled double header from earlier in the season. SBU split with FHSU, winning game one 3-1, but falling 0-5 in game two. The split brings the Bearcats to 6-43 (3-19 MIAA).

Game One
The first three SBU batters all singled to lead off the game, loading the bases. However, the Tigers pitched their way out of the jam, keeping the score at 0-0. With two outs in the 2nd inning, the Tigers launched one over the wall to make the score 1-0. Lauren Strobel and Megan Schellert both picked up a hit in the 2nd as well.

In the 5th inning, Megan Schellert picked up her third hit of the game, doubling to left field. With two outs in the inning, Kori Hillenburg reached on an error, moving Schellert to third. SBU scored their first run on a passed ball, as well as putting a runner on third. Miranda Aguilar drove in the go-ahead run, putting SBU up 2-1. Lauren Strobel tacked on an insurance run in the 6th, smacking a home run to left field. The Bearcats held their ground in the top of the 7th, claiming a 3-1 victory.

Megan Schellert went 3-4 at the plate, and Lauren Strobel went 2-3 with an RBI. Maddie Massanelli got the win, throwing a complete game. She allowed just one run on 4 hits.

Game Two
The first couple of innings were quiet, neither team generating any offense. The Tigers broke things open in the 3rd, scoring 4 runs. Emily Hall reached in the 3rd on a walk, becoming SBU's first baserunner of the game. In the 5th inning, Hall reached on an infield single, breaking up the FHSU no hit bid. Lauren Strobel was on base, moving her to second. However, the next Bearcat hit into a double play, ending the threat. Paige St. Pierre and Kori Hillenburg hit back to back singles in the 6th, but they were stranded as the inning ended. The Tigers picked up their 5th run in the 7th inning, creating a final of 5-0.

SBU will host Drury in their next competition, taking place on Tuesday, April 23 at 2 PM.
