Maryville, Mo. – The Bearcats were up in Maryville visiting Northwest Missouri State Monday afternoon, making up a double header that was rained out previously. The green Bearcats took both games by scores of 9-7 and 5-1, moving the purple Bearcats to 5-38 (2-14 MIAA) on the season.
Game One
Kaitlyn Bagby was the first Bearcat aboard for SBU, leading off the 2
nd inning with a single. In the bottom of the 2
nd, Northwest broke the game open, taking a 4-0 lead. Leading off the 3
rd was
Lauren Strobel, driving a single up the middle. After a fly out and a fielder's choice,
Megan Schellert extended the inning by reaching on an error, putting runners on first and second. Northwest got the third out via fielder's choice, ending the threat.
Northwest tacked on 2 more runs in the 3
rd, taking a 6-0 lead.
Kaitlyn Bagby got her second hit of the afternoon in the 4
th inning, driving one to left field with one out. She advanced to second on a passed ball during the next at-bat, and advancing to third in a similar manner. However, she would be stranded there as the inning came to an end. Northwest pushed their lead to 7 in the 5
th, leading off with a home run.
Kori Hillenburg doubled to lead off the 6
th inning.
Kaitlyn Bagby was the next batter, collecting her third hit of the game to put runners on first and third with no outs.
Taryn Elia entered the game, pinch running for Bagby. After a strikeout, the next batter hit a ground out that moved Elia to second and scored Hillenburg, making the game 7-1. Keeping the momentum going in the 7
th,
Emily Hall singled up the middle to lead things off, advancing to second on a passed ball.
Nicole Horstman then hit a double, driving in Hall to make the score 7-2.
Megan Schellert also jumped on the hit parade, singling to center field and advancing to second on an error by Northwest, 7-3 now the score. A very similar play then happened to
Kori Hillenburg, singling to the outfield and advancing on an error by the outfielder, 7-4. The shortstop made an error on the next play, allowing another run to score, cutting Northwest's lead to just 7-5.
Morgan McMullin was next at the plate, driving a run in on a sacrifice fly. After a second out,
Lauren Strobel singled up the middle, putting runners at first and second for
Emily Hall once again. Hall came up clutch for the second time in the inning, hitting a single to drive in the tying run to send the game into the bottom of the 7
th at 7-7. However, a two run home run ended the game in the 7
th, 9-7 the final score.
Game Two
Megan Schellert smacked a single up the middle to lead off the game, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Kori Hillenburg was then hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second for SBU, but Northwest got two outs before they could advance any further.
Rachel Brown led off the 2
nd inning with a single to center, and a batter later,
Emily Hall singled to right. Again, Northwest was able to get out of the jam unharmed.
In the bottom of the 2
nd, Northwest broke the scoreless tie, taking a 3-0 lead. The struck twice again in the 3
rd, going ahead 5-0. In the 5
th inning, SBU had two quick outs, but
Paige St. Pierre extended the inning with a single into center field.
Kori Hillenburg drew a walk, then
Kaitlyn Bagby put SBU on the scoreboard with an RBI single into left field, 5-1 Northwest. The Bearcats would be unable to plate any more runs, ending with a 5-1 final score.
Kaitlyn Bagby led the Bearcats offensively, going 5-7 with 2 RBIs on the day.
SBU hits the road again tomorrow, playing a double header at Pittsburg State at 2 PM.
