Bolivar, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods visited Bolivar on Saturday for a big MIAA matchup. The #5 ranked Ichabods narrowly edged out the Bearcats, 4-3 being the final score.
In doubles play, the Ichabods began with a victory on court #2. SBU fought back, evening the doubles score at 1-1 with a 6-1 victory from
Sarah Brown and
Diana Cabrera on court #3. Washburn clinched the doubles point on court #1 as their #3 ranked team topped SBU's #6 ranked team.
Jill Van den Dungen quickly evened the score at 1-1 with a controlling victory on court #1, 6-1 and 6-2. Her opponent was ranked #25 in the nation, but she didn't let that affect her.
Klara Vickov was the next Bearcat to finish, winning on court #3 in two straight sets, 6-2 6-3, putting SBU up 2-1. Washburn's #2 player in the nation won on court #2, evening the score once again. The Ichabods then won on courts #4 and #5 as well, claiming the victory for Washburn.
Dona Abohabaga played in her first match of the year following an ankle injury at the beginning of the semester. She defeated her opponent handily, winning 7-5 6-2 on court #6 to make the final score 4-3 in favor of Washburn.
The Bearcats have made a schedule change for their next match. The match against Emporia State was initially scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 14, but it will now be played on Monday, April 15 at 2 PM.
