Springfield, Mo. – The Bearcats traveled just over half an hour south to take on the Drury Panthers. Southwest Baptist picked up the win, defeating Drury 9-2. The win improves the Bearcats to 10-17 (4-11 MIAA).
Caleb Sneed led off the game with a single up the middle, but was later out at 2
nd base on a fielder's choice.
Drew Wagner got the start for the Bearcats. Although he walked the first batter, he got a double play and another ground out, only facing three batters. In the 2
nd inning,
Jackson Soule singled to the shortstop and then stole second, putting him in scoring position. However, the Panthers played solid defense, getting out of the inning unharmed.
The Bearcats broke the game open in the 3
rd inning, scoring 5 runs. It all started with a one out single from
Caleb Sneed.
Carl Schwettmann then reached on an infield single, moving Sneed to second. The next batter was
Hunter Hisky, drawing a walk to load the bases. Following Hisky's walk,
Noah Tucker lined a ball up the middle to drive in
Caleb Sneed and
Carl Schwettmann, putting the Bearcats up 2-0. After a second out, Hisky and Tucker both advanced on a stolen base, and Sam Avila singled to left center to bring in both runs. Sam Avila then stole second and was driven in by
Hayden Crabtree, giving SBU a 5-0 lead.
Drury tried to answer, scoring one run with one out in the 3
rd, but a 4-6-3 double play brought the inning to an end.
Caleb Sneed picked up his third hit of the game to lead off the 4
th inning, doubling down the left field line. After one out,
Hunter Hisky traded spots with Sneed, also hitting a double to push SBU's lead to 6-0. In the 6
th inning, Sam Avila hit a single to lead things off, advancing all the way to third on a ground out from the next batter.
Blake Lutgen then drew a walk, but ball four was a wild pitch, scoring Avila. The Panthers scored their second run of the game in the 5
th inning, but that was all they'd get.
The innings sped by until the top of the 9
th where SBU scored twice more. It began with a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing
Hunter Hisky to reach base. He moved over to second during the next at-bat thanks to a wild pitch, and over to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Jackson Soule followed, driving Hisky in on a sacrifice fly, 8-2 Bearcats. The next batter was Sam Avila, doubling to left field.
Hayden Crabtree followed with a single into right, driving in Avila to create a 9-2 lead.
Dalton Morrow finished things up, getting a fly out and two strikeouts to end the game.
Sam Avila led the Bearcats offensively, going 3-5 at the plate, driving in 2 runs, and scoring 3 himself.
Caleb Sneed also had 3 hits, scoring 2 runs.
Drew Wagner was credited with the win, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up 6 hits and just 2 earned runs.
Dalton Morrow finished the game, pitching the remaining 4.2 innings, allowing just 2 hits and no walks.
The Bearcats continue their road stretch, heading to Talequah, Oklahoma Friday afternoon to begin a three game series against Northeastern State.
