Wichita, Kan. – The Bearcats began an 8 game road trip Wednesday, playing a doubleheader against Newman University. The Jets came out on top in both games by scores of 3-1 and 5-1, bringing SBU to 3-20 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.
Game One
Sam Moran drew a walk to start the game, moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Megan Schellert then reached on a walk as well, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout kept the Bearcats from scoring. In the second inning,
Morgan McMullin led off with a double, later advancing to third on a ground out. Following the ground out,
Kori Hillenburg drove McMullin in on a sacrifice fly, giving the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead.
Newman responded well, scoring 2 runs in their half of the second to take over 2-1.
Miranda Aguilar got on base with one out in the third, driving a single to the shortstop, but no damage was done in the inning. The Jets had a runner at third with one out in the 3
rd, but
Maddie Massanelli sat the next two batters down on strikes to get out of the inning. Newman's third run was scored in the 5
th inning, scoring on a sacrifice bunt. With their last chance to score, the Bearcats got runners on first and third, but they were stranded as the Jets got the final out, taking the game 3-1.
Game Two
Leading things off was
Megan Schellert, driving a single into right field.
Paige St. Pierre moved her over to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Schellert advanced to third on an infield single by
Lauren Strobel.
Miranda Aguilar then hit a fielder's choice, scoring Schellert to give SBU a 1-0 lead. The Jets roared back, scoring 4 in their half of the first.
Yezzania Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to lead off the second, but she was stranded at first as the inning ended.
Paige St. Pierre doubled to left field to lead things off in the third inning. A batter later,
Lauren Strobel smacked a single up the middle, but
Paige St. Pierre was thrown out trying to score. Newman took a 5-1 lead in the 4
th inning. The Bearcats were able to get runners to second and third with one out in the 5
th inning, but the Jets were able to get out of the inning unharmed. The home team led off the 6
th inning with a single, but a fielder's choice got the runner out at second, followed by a double play to help SBU get out of the inning. The Bearcats were unable to score again, creating a 5-1 final score.
Megan Schellert and
Lauren Strobel both had two hits in the game, Schellert scoring the lone run for SBU.
Kaylee Schmidli pitched all 6 innings for SBU, giving up just 1 earned run and allowing only 5 hits.
The Bearcats head to Truman State for their next series, taking on the Bulldogs at 2 PM on Tuesday, March 26.
