William Jewell Takes Two Against SBU Tuesday Afternoon

Bolivar, Mo. – The softball team played their first games since playing Illinois Springfield over a week ago. William Jewell College defeated SBU 3-0 in both games, moving SBU to 3-18 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.

Game One
The Cardinals got runners to first and third in the 1st inning, but Maddie Massanelli helped the Bearcats out of the inning with no harm. Megan Schellert began SBU's offense with a leadoff walk, but she was stranded at first. William Jewell capitalized on an opportunity in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Morgan McMullin and Yezzania Gonzalez singled in back to back at bats, but a ground out put the offensive threat to an end.

After a quick few innings, the visitors scored another run in the 6th, taking a 2-0 lead. Paige St. Pierre hit a one out single in the bottom of the 6th, trying to spark the Bearcat offense. Two quick outs ended the inning, keeping the Cardinals ahead 2-0. William Jewell scored another in the 7th, 3-0. Morgan McMullin drew a two out walk in the 7th, and Yezzania Gonzalez reached on a hit by pitch, but they were unable to come around to score, ending the game 3-0.

Game Two
William Jewell got their offense going early, putting up a run in the first inning. Paige St. Pierre got things going for SBU, smacking a one out single to center field. After another out, Lauren Strobel singled to right center, moving Paige St. Pierre over to third. During the next at-bat, Strobel stole second, but both runners were stranded on base. The Cardinals scored another in the third inning, jumping ahead 2-0. Sam Moran led off SBU's half of the third with a single and later advanced to second after Lauren Strobel singled as well, but again both runners were stranded.

Kaitlyn Bagby hit a single to left field to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Morgan McMullin moved Bagby to second on a sacrifice bunt, but she'd advance no further as the inning came to an end. The third Jewell run came in the 5th inning, an unearned run. SBU was unable to mount any more offense, ending the game 3-0.

Lauren Strobel led the Bearcats, going 2-3 in the game. Sam Moran, Paige St. Pierre, Kaitlyn Bagby, and Yezzania Gonzalez were responsible for the other SBU hits.

The Bearcats hit the road for their next four series, starting with a double header at Newman University on March 20 starting at 2 PM.
