Bearcats Fall to Miners in Rolla

Rolla, Mo. – In a single game matchup between the Missouri S&T Miners and the Bearcats on Tuesday, the Miners defeated the Bearcats 7-1. The loss moves SBU to 8-11 (3-6 MIAA) on the year.

The first few innings were played with solid defense from both squads, allowing just two S&T hits. Drew Wagner was on the mound for SBU, his 6th start of the 2019 season. In the bottom of the third inning, the Miners broke the scoreless tie, bringing home just one run. Missouri S&T continued their momentum in the fourth inning, scoring another to build their lead to 2-0.

Leading things off in the 6th inning was Tyler Mathys. He drove a double to left center, getting in scoring position with no outs. Brett Mitchell followed with a single, driving Mathys in to cut the Miner lead in half. Luke Winfrey was next at the plate, reaching on a bunt single down the first base line. The SBU momentum came to a stop there as the Miners were able to get the next three Bearcats in order. S&T wasted no time responding, as they scored another in the 6th, making the score 3-1.

With one out in the 7th inning, Jackson Soule singled up the middle and later stole second to move into scoring position. After a second out, Tyler Mathys reached on a walk, but the inning came to an end on a fielder's choice. Missouri S&T scored the remainder of their runs in the bottom of the 7th, heading into the 8th with a 7-1 lead. Caleb Sneed hit a one out double to left center field, and Noah Tucker was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd for the Bearcats in the 8th. However, neither of those runners would come around to score. No offense was able to generate in the 9th, creating a final score of 7-1 in favor of S&T.

Drew Wagner threw 5.2 innings, giving up just 2 earned runs on 8 hits. Five different Bearcats collected hits on the afternoon, Brett Mitchell with the lone RBI.

The Bearcats return home for their next competition, opening a series with the Central Missouri Mules beginning Friday at 3 PM.
